Makeshift Magazine— A field guide to hidden creativity

EXCITEMENT!

I'm a longtime fan of Makeshift Magazine. So when the opportunity came to write for them I immediately jumped on it. It was a bit hectic writing it during IBM Design's Bootcamp, but it was so, so worth it.

The piece is titled Kampala Remix and explains in detail the art of VJing in Kampala and tells the story of a few youths VJing under a hot sun in the slum area of Kamwokya. See the project here.

I had planned to donate the compensation I received for this piece to the youths I worked with at TLC Youth Center in Kamwokya, Kamapala. One of my main goals this year is to continue to tell the story of the youths and what they did in their hometown. If there was compensation for that, I was happy to continue to give back to them in any way I could. 

When the piece made it to publication, I received terrible news from Venas, the teen VJing in the article's main photo. He was mugged in Kamwokya and needed surgery and some dental implants. Rarely do I feel that I could actually make a difference in someone's life, but in this case, Venas told me that the money he received for his share helped him get the surgery he needed. I wish him very speedy recovery.
